Frequently Asked Questions
Some of the most frequently asked questions we are asked include:
How good are leadlight windows from a security aspect? Will they keep the average burglar out?
A They are stronger than any normal window pane. The strength of the lead came, soldered joints and sealing compound is surprisingly strong. The glass pieces are usually very small so when the strength of the lead, solder and sealant is added to these small pieces, they are much stronger than any other forms of conventional window. Hollywood films where burglars are shown peeling back lead cames and removing the glass to gain entry are pure fantasy!
How good are leadlight windows from a safety point of view?
A As the glass used is generally small (as mentioned above) you don't have to worry about your children hurting themselves should they run into a leadlight panel. However, there is a known risk factor in excess exposure to lead, but this is generally very low and affects people who are exposed to old lead that has broken down over time. Those working with leadlights are at the most risk, and our staff have regular blood tests to monitor their lead levels.
I've heard that leadlight windows are really expensive. Is this true?
A It depends on what you call expensive. Most of my clients are pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced our panels are. Good leadlight panels add value to homes, so are generally seen as an investment, not a cost.
Will they leak?
A Not if they are made properly. However there are some rare occassions when extreme weather conditions will test the most water-tight windows. As leadlight panels age and the lead stretches (particularly in windy conditions) there is a chance that leaks may occur, but this generally happens after many years.
